The Ohio Board of Regents has set up strict guidelines for purpose of the Research Challenge Program fund.
To initiate new research ideas and explore their validity as a basis for new research grant/contract applications and/or to better address technology transfer opportunities.
To assist newly hired faculty to establish or reestablish their research programs.
To meet unexpected requirements of on-going research programs.
To initiate inter/multi-disciplinary research programs when appropriate to address research needs and to use more effectively university research resources.
To provide cost-sharing for externally supported research efforts, especially for the acquisition of research equipment and/or the development of major new research centers.
To update and renovate research laboratories.
To acquire major items of research equipment, especially items that can be used by more than a single investigator.
For the repair and maintenance of research equipment.
Limitations of Expenditure
Equipment expenditures are limited to 25% of the total Research Challenge Program funds. Because of this, only those researchers who have been specifically awarded equipment dollars may use their Research Challenge award for capital purchases.
Salaries may be applied on a short-term basis 24 months for faculty and other researches of equivalent or similar rank. Complete phasing out of Research Challenge support should occur within three years. No salary support from the fund is allowed for administrative and secretarial or clerical staff. The funds also can not be used to pay salaries for sabbaticals or professional leaves of absence.
Supplementation of existing grant or contract funds with Research Challenge funds are allowed.
Research Challenge funds may not be used for:
Training students in research methods and techniques as part of course work, workshops or conferences
Sponsoring conferences, symposia or workshops
International travel.
The establishment of new major research institutes and/or
center requires specific negotiation with the Ohio Board of Regents.
